An observation that I hope is useful to other builders:
The instructions for Steps 34-6 and 34-7 are a little confusing and actually show the brake mechanism being installed on the back plate upside down. The left rear drum brake plate (part #34-A) should be fitted to the left brake inner cover (part # 34-C) with the brake cylinder moulding furthest away from the notch in the left brake inner cover, NOT adjacent to it as illustrated by the instructions.
The handbrake mechanism that is represented by the (moulded on) small single spring and lever should be at the bottom, with the brake slave cylinder at the top, when the brake assembly is on the axle and the chassis the right way up. This can be confirmed by noting the position of the handbrake cable entry point on the back of #34-C and referring to photographs of the real car's rear brakes.
